Most people think of New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Washington D.C. as the best places to visit in the United States. The United States offers more than 18,000 cities and towns, and sticking to only the biggest or best-known places would be a mistake.
I’ve put together this list of 5 unusual places to visit in the United States to show you some less-visited spots that will make your trip there more fun.
Top 5 most unusual destinations in the USA
Denver, Colorado
Denver, Colorado, is one of the best locations in the USA and one of the most well-liked summer travel destinations.
Denver is called “The Mile High City” because it is one mile high, at 5,280 feet. Denver’s population is just over 600,000, making it a big city. The beautiful Rocky Mountains in the background are a bonus.
Gold mining was the city’s main industry during its founding in 1858. At Larimer Square, people can eat, drink, and shop under a canopy of string lights in some of the original buildings from the late 1800s.
The first cheeseburger was served in Denver in 1935. The city has a great food scene and is known for its great cocktails and breweries. It has several museums and eight professional sports teams that play games like American football and rugby.
Visitors can attend a performance at the unique Red Rocks Amphitheater or plan a day excursion to the enchanted Colorado Rocky Mountains to take advantage of all the outdoor activities they offer.
Las Vegas, Nevada
Las Vegas should be on every list of the best places to visit in the United States.
Las Vegas is called “America’s playground,” and everyone should go there at least once.
Along the Las Vegas Strip are over four miles of neon-lit casinos, restaurants, and entertainment venues. It’s impossible not to get caught up in the fun atmosphere. The Strip has a show for everyone, whether you like music, magic, or acrobatics that will blow your mind.
Want to see the world from the top of the tallest Ferris wheel in the world? In Vegas, you can do that. Have fun with heavy machinery? Yes, you can do the same thing in Vegas. Have a person who looks like Elvis preside over your wedding. Vegas is also a possibility, but I wouldn’t always recommend it.
The point is that there are so many fun and different things to do in Las Vegas.
Las Vegas is a great spot for day trips to some of America’s most beautiful national parks, like the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, and more.
Louisiana’s New Orleans
New Orleans must be on your list of interesting American cities to visit.
I might be a little bit partial, but New Orleans is my favorite out of all the US cities I’ve been to. My first time traveling with Worldpackers as a work exchanger in the United States was in New Orleans. I stayed there for almost two months and never ran out of things to do.
The city has a long, interesting history and a rich, unique culture. You have a winner when you add a lot of good food, a touch of the supernatural, and a thriving music scene.
In 1718, the French started building New Orleans. This was before the United States was made. It was sold to Spain and then back to France before the United States finally bought it in 1803. The city’s architecture and signature dishes still show French and Spanish influences.
No article about New Orleans would be complete without mentioning the city’s party scene, which peaks during the Mardi Gras celebrations in February but continues all year on Bourbon Street and Frenchmen Street, where live jazz music is played every night.
On Bourbon Street, you shouldn’t forget to try a “hand grenade” cocktail, but sip it slowly!
The southern city of Charleston
If you want to find peace in a beautiful place, Charleston, South Carolina, is the place to go. Charleston is a beautiful place to live because of its beautiful oak trees, cobblestone streets, and antebellum architecture.
Charleston is a port city that has been around since 1670 and is known for its charm and southern hospitality. Charleston is also known for its great restaurants, and when I went there, I didn’t find a single one that wasn’t great. There are also some great breweries in the area that you should check out.
Every second Sunday of the month, people can go to the Second Sunday Street Fair on King Street to eat, shop, and listen to live music. The nearby sandy beaches are also great places to relax, take a boat tour of the Charleston Harbor, or walk down The Battery to take great pictures on Instagram.
Sedona, Arizona
Some people have said that Sedona is the most beautiful place in America. It is a desert city with a New Age vibe and amazing views of the red rock formations around it.
The city is good at a lot of things. There are 23 art galleries, a great food scene, and the Verde Valley Wine Trail, one of my favorites.
Sedona is a place where you will want to spend time outside. There isn’t much light pollution, which makes it a great place to look at the stars.
Hiking, biking, rafting, and other fun activities can be found nearby. Hot air balloon rides are another popular thing to do in Sedona. From high above the city streets, visitors can see the beautiful scenery.
